Let me give you a little background on myself…

I first hear about affiliate marketing in 2016

You see, I had recently moved to the US with my family and the possibility to work from home, with flexible hours, sounded perfect! I would be able to stay close to my kids and help them get adjusted to their new lives.

At the same time, I would manage my business, be my own boss, and increase our family income.

So I started to read books, research about people that had already successfully done it, and what would be the best way to join the industry.

They got my attention. I decided that wanted to be part of it as well.

And – of course – I wasn’t the only one, as I soon realized.

Who is It For?

      • Parents who have 9 to 5 jobs and don’t get to spend as much time with their kids as they wished for.
      • Anyone in need of extra money to pay bills, buy a house, or take that dream trip with the family.
      • Retired people that would appreciate an additional income besides the opportunity to stay active.
      • Whoever dreams of working while traveling the world.
      • Workers who’d love to escape the rat race and start living on their own terms.
      • Individuals that want to create multiple streams of passive income.
      • High-school graduates who can’t/don’t want to go to college.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is the activity of promoting third-party products/services and getting paid a commission (also called fee) for every sale completed through your affiliate link.

Oh, you may be thinking, but you’re NOT a salesperson? No problem, I’m not one either.

This is not about selling, it’s about identifying people’s problems, recommending solutions, and getting paid for that.

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you love making delicious desserts. You read new recipes, test them, maybe you even create your own.

When you start your online business, you choose to explore this topic. You build a website, write your recipes and experiences testing them, help people to get better when making their own desserts.

Meanwhile, you also tell your readers about the equipment you’ve been using, their features, pros and cons, why you like or dislike them. AND you include a link (called “affiliate link”) that when people click it they will be redirected to the merchant’s website (e.g. Amazon).

If they buy the product, you’ll get a commission.

Simple as that!

Now look at these numbers and think about the potential of this business:

Affiliate Marketing potential

We’re talking about millions of products to be sold to billions of people eager to buy.

Don’t forget the fact that each year, more and more people are willing to purchase online.

This is such a huge business opportunity.

Free Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Here are 4 Steps you need to follow to be successful in this area:

4 Steps to Affiliate Marketing

1) Choose an Interest

Some people will refer to this as “Choosing a Niche”.

If you were going to open a local shop, the starting point would be deciding on what type of product you’d be selling and to whom, correct?

It could be selling “high-quality baby clothes” or “professional kitchen utilities”.

The same happens in Affiliate Marketing, you first need to choose your niche.

>> BONUS TIP: It’s important that you choose a niche that you’re really interested about. It can be a hobby, a passion, or an area that you’re skilled at.

The point is that you’ll be highly involved with this subject (reading and writing about it most of the time). So you need to make sure that it’s not something that you’ll quickly be tired of.

2) Build a Website

Your website will be the backbone of your business. You’ll create quality content (remember, offering solutions to your readers’ problems) and your visitor will always know where to find “you” (your site).

The site you’ll build will be similar to that shop we talked about earlier, except that:

  • It’s not local, it’s Worldwide
  • It’s open 24/7/365 even when you’re sleeping, on vacation or doing anything else you’d like

And don’t worry, you don’t need to have any technical skill or invest a huge amount of money to build one.

As a matter of fact, you can do it for free, right now.

Give it a try – but come back, we still have 2 more steps to cover ????

Once your shop (website) is built, you’ll need to fill it with products for your customers. That’s when creating content comes into to play.

If you offer valuable information people will keep coming back looking for your advice and recommendations.

3) Attract Visitors

Fully equipping a beautiful shop will not be a guarantee of business success.

The same occurs online. You may have great content but if no one visits your site, nothing happens.

You need to take action so that you get visitors (tons of them).

>> BONUS TIP: Be wary of people offering traffic to your website. Lots of newbies have fallen for that and lost a lot of money. The thing is, yes, you need visitors but not just any kind. It’s not just about quantity but also quality.

If your website promotes baby clothing what would be the point to have the visit of 100,000 middle-aged single men, per day? They would likely go in and out in a matter of seconds.

4) Earn Revenue

Why #4 makes me smile

But seriously, this is when you see that all the work and dedication pays-off.

How much you’ll earn depends on how well you perform the first 3 Steps with focus and consistency.

In other words, you need to learn the best practices and take action.

Here’s a training I believe you’ll enjoy. It explains How To Make Money with Affiliate Marketing:

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? That’s what I thought too.

I have to admit though that at the beginning all this seemed way too good to be true. So I decided to do some brainstorming to help me realize if it really was a good fit for me.

Here is what I came up with.

10 Key Benefits of Affiliate Marketing

10 Key Benefits of Affiliate Marketing

After writing this list, I had no more doubts. I should really give it a try.

Things You Need to Build an Affiliate Marketing Business

Considering that you got this far, I assume you’re really interested in starting your online endeavor.

So I put together this list.

It should help you understand what’s involved in a project like this.

✅ Domain
✅ Hosting platform
✅ Website
✅ Training on how to show up on the First page of search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc)
✅ Training on driving traffic (visitors) to your website and converting (having them buy the products you promote)
✅ Technical support
✅ Networking with like-minded people
✅ Mentoring
✅ Laptop and internet connection
✅ Time and dedication (this is clearly not an overnight get-rich-scheme)

It sure seems a lot, doesn’t it?

It’s so funny I stumbled across your website because I myself have a food blog.
I laughed aloud when I read the example you used for someone that loves to create desserts or test others recipes. I do both!
I’m focused on the testing others at the moment. My main focus lately has been on content, which is really key for the website like you explained.
Hopefully, in the next few weeks, I can jump back into the affiliate marketing part. Thanks for reminding me of this! I’ve gotten so carried away with recipe development that I’ve gotten off track with that!

      Hi Jennifer,

I love when one of the examples makes perfect sense to someone! lol

Writing quality content should really be your main focus, you’re right!

Just don’t miss out any opportunities.

What I mean is, if you’re testing and writing about other people’s recipes, why not include right away an affiliate link to the recipe book?

Your visitors may be willing to buy it… If they do, it will be like I mentioned on Step #4, money on your way and a smile on your face! 🙂

This post may help you to find good affiliate programs.

      All the best!

Hi Eliane, this is something I really need to improve on.
I believe that Shawn could add some affiliate marketing to his blog, but so far we also have been focused on content more than the affiliate side.
I think it is difficult to know what to link or add to the content sometimes.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • Eliane says:

      Hi, Tara.

I know how you feel. And I think you’re right in focusing more on content in the beginning. But then, after a while, as in any business, you need to make sure there are good sources of income.

On my first website, I felt a bit lost as to what I should promote/link to. But then, as I started choosing programs I got more comfortable with the process, and the type of affiliations I wanted. I soon realized it was not that difficult.

A very good introduction to affiliate marketing Eliane.
Really enjoyed reading your article, I like your light-hearted happy style of writing.
Affiliate marketing is an industry that still eludes many people, and “us” who are in it think that everyone and their dog knows about it! haha…
But that is so far from the truth! So many people out there don’t know what it is or even heard of it!(yes it surprises me every time anew)!!
Thank you for a great review!

    • Eliane says:

      Thanks for your words, Orion.
You’re right, a lot of people still aren’t aware of affiliate marketing. Whenever I meet someone and they ask what I do for a living, I need to explain it from the basics. And then, they realize that they’ve seen it before and say “Oh, so that’s what it is!” 🙂
I believe it’s important that we help more and more people understand not only how this industry works but also, and more importantly, what a great potential it represents in changing lifestyles and income generation.
As you can see, I’m passionate about this because I truly believe lots of people can highly benefit from this.
