How to Sell Digital Pictures | Earn from Your Passion

How to Sell Digital Pictures

Let me guess: you are passionate about photography and want to learn how to sell digital pictures. Am I right?

Or maybe you’re an Internet Marketer looking for a new niche.

Either way, you’re at the right place.

Why?

Because although taking photos is a passion to millions of people, most of them still haven’t realized that making money from digital photos is actually much more simple than they imagine.

And that’s what I’m going to talk about today.

How Good are Your Photos?

How Good are your Digital Pictures?

Time to be 100% honest.

How appealing are the pictures you take? If they are not visually attractive, they aren’t going to sell.

This is the time to take a break from everything and evaluate the real possibilities you have at this.

Ask a good friend, your significant one, your kids… anyone you trust and know will be frank with you.

The truth is, if you’re not that good, you’ll be wasting your time in trying to sell them.

If you’re Not Approved as a Talented Photographer

Don’t worry, you can still earn from your passion even if you’re not going to sell your own shots.

Stay with me and you’ll find out how.

Passion is different from interest. Those who are just interested in things have the “wish”, but passionate people have the “will”.

Licensing | “Selling” Digital Pictures

Selling Digital Photos

There are lots of websites where you can offer your photos to be licensed.

How Does this Work?

Licensing is one of the most popular ways of selling pictures online.

You typically need to be approved by your desired website’s standard (some are very high). After this happens, you just need to upload your images to the site and get a commission whenever the sales happen.

How Much Can You Earn?

Percentages vary a lot depending on the website and on factors such as exclusivity. They can range from 20% to 75%+.

Some also pay fixed prices.

It’s really a matter of checking out each one of them.

Stock Photography Sites

Here’s a list of sites (and their URLs) to help in your search.

No worries, you can still make earn money from it.

Create Your Own Website

If you’re a professional, chances are you already have a portfolio site and you can leverage that.

But if you’re an amateur, don’t worry, creating a new website is so easy nowadays that it only takes about 5 minutes.

Building from there is what really needs to be your focus.

If you believe your pictures are good enough to attract buyers, you have the choice to sell them directly from your site and get the entire profit (not only a percentage as happens with Licensing).

But even if that’s not your case, you can promote products related to photography.

Let me give you a clear example:

This is an example of a Photography Website

This is a screenshot taken from the website of re-known photographer and filmmaker Timothy Allen.

Note that he not only showcases his photos (on the ‘portfolio’ option on the top menu) but also monetizes from the website.

  • Licensing his pictures
  • Promoting the equipment and gear he uses (he’ll get commissions on any sale made through the affiliate links shown above)
  • Selling participation on his expeditions/workshops

Okay, you may not be that experienced. I get it! But affiliate links and licensing are a real possibility for you.

Here’s One Idea:

You create a blog site where you talk about:

  • Basic Photography techniques
  • Feature popular professionals (Timothy Allen could be one!)
  • Present case studies
  • Interview photographers
  • Cover exhibitions
  • Places to travel and shoot unforgettable pictures
  • How to take gorgeous photos of your kids
  • Tips to take amazing pictures of your pets
  • Special Events photography

The list goes on and on. It can be endless!

You choose the topics you and your readers are most interested in, offer as much insight as you possibly can to genuinely help other people, and recommend products you trust.

See how this works? This is pure Affiliate Marketing!

You get a commission every time anyone buys from your affiliate links (like the ones on Timothy’s website).

>> TIP: Think about this, every time you write a recommendation you’re adding another stream of income to your financial portfolio. Your website will be up 24/7 and, if you apply the correct techniques and strategies, you’ll likely be making money while sleeping, traveling or shooting new pictures.

Affiliate Programs

Here are a few you can explore:

You just need to correctly choose the programs that best fit your website. You need to look at reliability, user experience, effectiveness, commission rates.

The beauty of this is that you can partner with as many affiliate programs as you wish. And promote as many products/services as you want.

I love taking pictures and am far from a professional, but I do get the odd great shot!
I never thought of licensing them for resale online!
What a great way to earn doing what you love! Thanks for sharing this!!

  2. Bester says:

    Hey, great article.
I did not realize that there were so many options available to earn from photography.
People tend to overcomplicate things, you made it sound easy. Definitely going to look into it.

  3. Heather says:

    I really enjoyed this post.
I love to write and share ideas on the Internet and I love to share photos in those posts – but I don’t like to take pictures.
I bought a fancy camera because my daughter said she wanted to take pictures for my business and then she never followed through.
Once in a while, I do take my own pictures – but most of the time I head over to a few of my favorite websites with free, public domain pictures available for use on the internet.

Do you think the rise of these sites where free photos are available has devalued and cut down on the profitability of the paid photo sites?

    • Eliane says:

      Hey, Heather!

I, like yourself, once in a while make use of the free images websites. And they’re great.
But when someone needs a more elaborate or even more exclusive picture paying for them is the way to go.

So I think there’s an opportunity for all.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Matts Mom says:

    Wow Elaine!
I had never thought about taking pictures and making money.
I have a great digital SLR camera I can use.
Beaches are my things, so I think I could get some revenue going.
This is a great avenue to think about.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • Eliane says:

      Definitely so.

Sparing a few minutes while at the beach to take a few shots and then uploading them when you get home. That’s all it takes for you to make a few extra dollars.

Or, having a website on beach destinations, you can start promoting products related to taking pictures of beaches. Then you’ll monetize your website even more.

It all depends on your business strategy.

Let me know if I can help you.
      All the best.

  5. Hello.
Wow I had no idea how in depth online photography could be. I really didn’t know that you could promote others pictures as well. Very interesting thank you for all of this wonderful information.

  6. Anita says:

I mostly take pictures for myself or for my website.
Some are good, many aren’t so good. My husband, however, takes wonderful pictures! He doesn’t necessarily think so, but he is.
I am going to pass this article on to him. Perhaps it is something he will do or keep in mind to do after he retires.
He has thousands of pictures from everywhere we have been and I think it is time he shares them with the world!

    • Eliane says:

      That’s wonderful, Anita!
You’re right, it’s time he shares those pictures with the world! I hope he does follow your advice.
I know I’d love to see them. 🙂

  7. Bruce says:

One of my favorite course in high school was photography.
I loved taking pictures and playing around with them in the darkroom to make interesting imaging.
There are so many things you can do with pictures now with even a camera phone.
I never realized though how to make money off of even a phone.
    This has been very insightful.

    • Eliane says:

Yes, Bruce, it’s amazing that even with a simple smartphone you can make money out of your pictures.

The thing is that technology has improved so much that those things are not just simple phones, or cameras anymore! Some of them result in almost professional looking pictures.

My husband takes unbelievable shots with his iPhone X! He shares them all the time and people love them.

  8. Ben says:

Wow, pretty good information on how to sell digital pictures!
I didn’t know we could sell our pictures on stock websites, now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense.
    Thanks for this.

    • Eliane says:

I’m glad you liked it, Ben!

Licensing digital pictures or promoting products/services related to photography can be a profitable activity.
In this last case, building a website is the first step to success.

  9. Glenys says:

    This is a great idea.
Lots of people have hobbies and photography is definitely lots of people’s hobbies. So why not earn a few $$ by doing something that you love right?
I really love the great quote that you gave “Passion is different from interest. Those who are just interested in things have the “wish”, but passionate people have the “will”.
I find this is so true of anything in life. Many people may enjoy a topic…. but some people make that topic their whole life.
Passionate photographers are definitely in this bucket.
There are tons of ways that a photographer can make money online. I am glad that you covered a few of them in great detail.
    Thanks for sharing.
